UX design and a design system for a Swiss regional news portal

suedostschweiz.ch is the regional news portal of the media house Somedia in Chur. We worked on its UX design across two relaunches, a new design system and the paths to a subscription.

The brief

People read the news on every screen size, so a news portal has to read well everywhere. Südostschweiz needed a clear, calm design and an easy path from reading to paying.

What we did

We have worked on UX design for Somedia since 2016. The first redesign went live in 2017, with a new concept and look built around the homepage and responsive layouts. About four years later the portal got a fresh look again, with more space and focus for readers.

Editors pick from a set of homepage templates to match the news of the day, so a big story gets a big teaser.

For the 2021 relaunch we also built a complete design system. Every element is documented, so designers, developers and editors all work from the same reference.

Paying without leaving the article

Readers who hit a paid article can buy it right there with their login, apart from the regular subscription shop. Two clicks and they keep reading.

A clearer subscription shop

In 2019 we redesigned the whole subscription shop for digital, e-paper and print. Readers compare the offers side by side and order in fewer steps, which means fewer support requests.
