Design, frontend and a ticket scanner app for a Zürich club

Kaufleuten is a club, culture venue and restaurant in Zürich. We worked on its design and frontend, and built the web app that scans tickets at the door.

The brief

Kaufleuten has been part of Zürich’s night and cultural life for over 100 years: club nights, concerts, readings and a restaurant. The website has to say what is on tonight and still feel like the place.

What we did

We worked on the design and the frontend of the site. We also built internal apps the team uses behind the scenes.

The site was redesigned mobile first. Restaurant and culture pages are light and easy to read, the club pages are dark to set the mood for a night out. Tickets and vouchers are paid on the site and arrive as a PDF with a QR code.

The ticket scanner

After the payment integration on the website, Kaufleuten needed faster entry at the door. We built a web app that scans tickets in real time and checks them against the club’s own event management tool. It runs on phones and tablets.

After each scan the app shows who bought the ticket and updates the number of guests inside. During Covid, that live count let the club keep to the capacity rules and answer the authorities at any moment.

How it went

We tested the app in the club on a real night, watching how light and the speed of the staff at the door affected scanning. Errors were logged with Sentry, so we could fix what broke before the next event.
